In Part One of the lecture, you learned about the early production methods and later design of the Bourgogne theatre. Now take a moment to consider in what ways this early French playhouse was similar to, and different from, the first public playhouses in England. The links below will take you to multimedia about these early English theatres.
For a review of the material concerning the Bourgogne theatre, visit the multimedia resources page, or the Playhouses of Seventeenth-Century Paris website. After you've compiled a list of similarities and differences, consider how what you know about the early seventeenth-century French and English theatres might be useful on an essay question on your exam. In what ways did these theatres harken back to their medieval antecedents? In what ways did socio-cultural and economic pressures affect the design of their auditoria? Upon what sorts of evidence do historians rely for their reconstructions of these theatres? How reliable do you think these reconstructions are?
