if the group isn't large enough to fill the house, the college places students there so that the house operates at maximum revenue. All the larger houses at Wesleyan (7 to 35 students) belong to this program except the Deke House. I don't know if you've been to Wesleyan lately, but it is a beautiful university. it is a place of quality. You may disagree with some things it stands for or it has done, that's the American way, but our Deke House is right in the middle of one of the country's great universities. The college's maintenance, its programs, its construction, its printing, whatever it does is A- 1. The standards it has set are above what our present house can meet. The college has a list of improvements we must make before we can be admitted. It is estimated that the improvements can be done for $150,000. Beyond the physical changes, there are standards of cleanliness and neatness that we must meet. To achieve this we need our alumni to become more actively involved. At our neighbor's, Psi U, their alumni make frequent visits to the house, encouraging and rallying the undergraduates to excellence. The college is pleased to have Psi U serve Wesleyan students. its standards are high. The same can be said of the other independents, Beta and AD. These houses are fully occupied. But the Deke House with a potential of housing some 34 students has only 16 residents who wish to live there. Wesleyan, by the way, is willing to buy our house if we're not able to improve it. I refuse to believe that we can't take care of our obligations ourselves. The point I'm making is that I feel we must join Program Housing if we --are to survive in the long run and be able to join it we must first make renovations. We're running out of time. Next summer while the students are away, we must have the money to make renovations for it will take all summer to cormplete them. it is not the College's fault that the Deke House is in such disrepair; it is our fault. I don't know of any valid excuses, so let's get on with it, make our contributions, protect our heritage and keep what meant so much to us alive. We need big donations this time.

DONATIONS: Gifts given directly to the house are the most useful, however, they are not tax-deductible. This type of gift is badly needed to bolster our operating funds during this difficult time while renovations are underway. These gifts should be made out to the new name for our alumni association Kent Literary Club. Check the appropriate box and mail the gift in the enclosed remittance envelope. The Rampant Lion Foundation will forward these gifts to our Board of Directors.

TAX-DEDUCTIBLE: Our Deke National, the Rampant Lion Foundation, has established a tax-deductible status (501). As other Deke chapters are doing, we can give donations to the Rampant Lion Foundation (tax-deductible), and, as we must specify, they will put the funds into our account, the Gamma Phi Fund, for our use only. The Rampant Lion Foundation will keep the records, manage the money, invest it as our Gamma Phi Fund Committee specifies, for a 2% fee. This committee operates independent of our Board of Directors and is responsible for developing the Fund, investing it and disbursing it. The expressed purpose of the Fund is first to provide money for House renovations and to ultimately create an endowment that would support special House and Fraternity needs. It is intended that rental income will  the necessary funds to cover daily operating costs. At this time we have some $50,000 pledged to our Gamma Phi Fund. Now we need to increase this to one-half million or more to achieve our goal.

DONORS' LIST: we want to acknowledge and honor those who assume the responsibility for keeping up our Deke House. This will be done in subsequent mailings in which we'll keep you informed of the progress we're making and those who are making the progress possible. We'll break it down into M Clubs. One-half M includes donations of $500 or more. One M includes donations of $1 000 or more. Five M includes donations of $5000 or more. And so on for Ten M, Twenty-five M and Fifty M. You don't have to give the money all in one year. We'll extend the giving for a 5- yr. period.

GIVING: Money is nice, but, besides money, stocks or other assets can be transferred. Credit cards may be used for cash payments (Visa, Mastercard or American Express). A business reply remittance envelope is enclosed for your convenience and an acknowledgment and thank you note will be sent to each of us who donate. The address to send tax-deductible gifts is: Rampant Lion Foundation, (Gamma Phi Fund), 35 McKinley Place, Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan 48236. if you have any questions, contact the head of the Rampant Lion Foundation, David Easlick, at (800) 560-3353. David is a lawyer and has been most helpful. Particularly with asset transfers, you might want his assistance. Jim Young '55 will coordinate the mailings, billings and keep the records of the campaign. He's at 91 Sagamore Terrace East, Westbrook, CT 06498 at (860) 3998575; Florida (561) 564-8746. It has been nice talking to you. If you have something you'd like to say, include it with your donation. We want to hear what you have to say. iby
